Cataract

Cataract is a Leading cause of preventable blindness in India.Cataract develops as you grow older, due to clouding of the eye’s natural crystalline lens.

Most people develop cataracts after the age of 60, in one or both eyes.

Cataract symptoms include

  • hazy, blurred or double vision,
  • sensitivity to light and glare,
  • difficulty seeing in poor lighting conditions,
  • difficulty in distinguishing changes in contrast,
  • fading of colours.
  • Seeing halos around light.

Catarct surgery is not an emergency but without surgery, your vision will continue to deteriorate and affect daily activities, such as your ability to read and drive.
Most age related cataracts progress gradually over a period of years. Cataracts in patients with diabetes and in  younger people may progress rapidly. There are no drops or medication available to treat cataract and it needs surgical removal.
No medication or  exercisecan  prevent or cure cataracts .

With modern technology, using ultrasound and lasers. one doesn’t have to wait till the cataract ripens and the vision is completely reduced.

When the cataract affects your day to day activities you need to consider surgery”

cataract surgery is done either under anesthetic drops  to numb the eye or small injection around the eye so that the patient is completely awake and asked to keep the neck and eye still during surgery which takes 20 to 25 minutes.

Cloudy lens or cataract is removed and it is replaced by a permanent intra ocular lens implant. After surgery you will have to take eye drops as directed by your ophthalmologist. After cataract surgery 95% of cases notice improvement in vision.

WHICH INTRAOCULAR LENS TO CHOOSE?

There are a number of Intraocular lenses available which vary in quality, features and price.

  • Monofocal Lens –enabeling you to see distance clearly but you will nweed near vision glasses.
  • Extended depth of focus lenses – These lenses will correct your vision for distance and intermediate vision. These lenses give you range of vision. You will need glasses for near vision.
  • Multifocal lenses- enable you to see for distance and near.
  • Trifocal lenses- which help you see distance, Intermediate(computer) and near.

All these lenses correct spherical component in your glasses, But if you have astigmatism and have to use cylindrical power in your glasses  you need to consider Toric IOLs.

There are many companies manufacturing these lenses, providing different features, indian as well as imported with different features.

The counsellor or your doctor will explain you about these, understand your needs and suggest  the best suitable lens for you. All these lenses are permanent and do not need replacement throughout life once implanted in the eye.

REMEMBER THAT ALL THE LENSES HAVE THEIR OWN ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES .

YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THESE PROPERLY BEFORE SELECTING THE LENS FOR YOUR EYE WITH THE HELP OF COUNSELLOR.

ALLTHOUGH WE TRY TO ACHIEVE 100% DESIRED OUTCOME IT MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE ALL THE TIME DUE TO PERSONAL VARIATION , INSTRUMENTAL ERRORS OR SMALL PROBLEMS ARISING AT THE TIME OF SURGERY.

YOU DO GET FREEDOM FTOM GLASSES MOST OF THE TIMEs (90 TO 95% OF THE TIME ) BUT FOR ACCURACY YOU MAY STILL NEED SMALL CORRECTION WITH GLASSES.
